How to Make Roman Shades Blackout

Options to improve the light control of an existing Roman shade, with practical checks for lining, fit, gaps and safe operation.

Identify where light enters

Lower the shade and observe whether light passes through the material, enters around the perimeter, or both. The appropriate change depends on the source of the light rather than the shade style alone.

If light passes through the panel

A compatible blackout lining may improve light control through the body of the shade. Adding a layer can change weight, fold behavior and operation, so confirm that the existing construction and mechanism can support the change before altering it.

If light enters around the edges

• Check whether the shade is centered and level.
• Review the side clearances required for operation.
• Consider whether an outside-mount configuration with additional overlap is suitable.
• Keep handles and trim from interfering with the shade.

Do not obstruct safe operation

Any alteration should allow the shade to raise and lower freely. Do not cover control components, overload the mechanism or remove safety devices. Follow the instructions for the installed hardware.

When replacement may be simpler

If the existing shade cannot accept a lining, does not cover the opening adequately or no longer operates correctly, a correctly specified replacement may be more practical than extensive alteration.
